For sellers of industrial scrap, titanium is typically priced according to its grade, weight, and condition. That approach can result in a significant loss of value when the material contains ruthenium, iridium, or another platinum-group metal. A titanium component may carry only a microscopic catalytic coating, yet that coating’s recoverable value can exceed the value of the much heavier substrate. The materials most commonly overlooked are mixed-metal oxide anodes, also known as MMO or dimensionally stable anodes, and specialty titanium-ruthenium alloys, such as ASTM Grades 26 through 29. Sellers should separate these materials and have them evaluated before accepting an ordinary titanium price.
Ruthenium is a platinum-group metal used in industrial electrochemistry, electronics, data storage, chemical processing, and energy technologies. Because it is generally recovered as a byproduct of platinum and palladium mining, its supply cannot quickly respond to changes in demand. This process can make ruthenium significantly more valuable than the titanium carrying it.
MMO anodes are usually made from Grade 1 or Grade 2 titanium coated with a thin layer containing ruthenium oxide, iridium oxide, titanium dioxide, tantalum oxide, platinum, or a combination of these materials. The coating allows the anode to conduct electricity efficiently and promote reactions such as chlorine or oxygen evolution. These anodes are used in chlor-alkali plants, water-treatment systems, sodium hypochlorite generators, electrochlorination equipment, plating operations, metal recovery, and impressed-current cathodic protection. When an anode becomes “spent,” it may no longer operate efficiently, but that does not mean all its precious-metal coating is gone. Residual ruthenium, iridium, or platinum may still make it valuable refinery feed.
MMO-coated titanium often has a dark gray, brown, blue-black, or jet-black surface. The finish may look matte, porous, ceramic-like, scratched, or unevenly worn. Common forms include expanded mesh, narrow ribbon, perforated plates, tubular deep-well anodes, baskets, grids, and curved electrolyzer components. Some assemblies remain attached to titanium conductor bars or insulated electrical cables.
A dark-coated titanium mesh, tube, plate, or ribbon from an electrochemical installation should not be mixed with general titanium scrap. Its source can provide another important clue. Material from chlorine production, water treatment, marine cathodic protection, plating lines, offshore pipelines, or industrial electrolyzers is more likely to carry a precious-metal-bearing coating.
Documentation is particularly valuable for bulk alloys. Sellers should preserve grade stamps, heat numbers, tags, mill certificates, drawings, and maintenance records. An ordinary-looking titanium pipe or heat-exchanger component may command a different valuation if records indicate that it came from a severe chemical service or was manufactured from a ruthenium-bearing grade.
Titanium typically produces brilliant white sparks with intense branching when touched to a grinder. This can help distinguish it from stainless steel and other metals, but it cannot confirm the presence of ruthenium. In a bulk alloy, the ruthenium concentration is too low to cause a dependable change in titanium’s spark pattern. On an MMO anode, grinding may remove the thin, valuable coating almost immediately, exposing the underlying substrate. The resulting sparks identify only the base titanium. Aggressive grinding, blasting, or polishing may also destroy coating material needed for evaluation. Suspect components should remain intact until they have been tested.
The rule for sellers is straightforward: if titanium has a dark catalytic coating or came from electrochemical, marine, chemical-processing, or other corrosive service, do not sell it as bare metal until it has been evaluated.
Separating suspect material, preserving its documentation, and arranging proper testing can prevent valuable ruthenium or iridium from being lost in an ordinary titanium load. By presenting intact material to an experienced buyer such as Phoenix Refining, sellers can pursue the precious-metal premium hidden in what might otherwise appear to be routine titanium scrap.
